Cultural Difference Between Chinese Malaysians and People from China

by Chaz

I am Chaz from Sri Lanka, and I was wondering whether there is a significant cultural difference between Chinese people in Malaysia and Chinese people from China? We have been dating for 3 years.

Thanks, Chaz

Nihao Chaz,

Thanks for your interest in our website.

The short answer to your question is that most Chinese people in Malaysia have a lot more in common with Mainland Chinese people of three specific regions in China. These regions are diverse in themselves - they have different languages, cuisine and sub-cultures.

Most Malaysian Chinese are originally from Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan province. Naturally, Malaysian Chinese are more inflected by the local culture of those provinces.

If you want the long version, here is a detailed article about Malaysian Chinese. Please refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_Chinese.

I think after reading that article, you will know the differences between Chinese Malaysians and people from China.

Best regards,

Victoria
