Engagement Traditions for Shanghai
What would be a good gift to bring to her parents?
I want to ask my Chinese girlfriend to marry me. She is Han and grew up in Shanghai. Her parents are still living there. What would be a good gift to bring to her parents when asking for their daughters marriage?
Are there any customs specific to Shanghai?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
For traditional Shanghainese people, you would need to bring rooster, herring, leg of pig, goose, nuts, and so on, when you go to ask your girlfriend's parents to permission to marry their daughter.
But nowadays, Shanghai people seldom follow that custom.
Usually you can buy jewelry for her mother and a watch for her father.
For the best choice of gifts, you'd bestask for your Chinese girlfriend's suggestions.
Since she is the one who knows her parents best, she will know what gifts would make them happiest, win their hearts and get their agreement.
Also, don't forget to ask them how much they need for the dowry (送嫁妆). It is a common custom in China to ask bride money from the future son-in-law.
