The Staten Island Chinese School
For more than 30 years, the Staten Island Chinese School provides an opportunity for children to learn one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. The school features two Chinese dialects - your choice of Mandarin and/or Cantonese classes.
They use textbooks and educational materials from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China.
Traditional Chinese characters (used in Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan) will be taught in classes, but some classes will also introduce the simplified characters (used in mainland China and Singapore) as well.
In their Mandarin classes, Pin-Yin (the pronunciation system from mainland China) will be used for students to be prepared for the SAT II Chinese Language Exam.
Special events such as a Chinese New Year celebration and speech contest will be held during school year, in order to increase students enthusiasm and interest in learning.
Students can also choose from a variety of activities such as penmanship, chess, Kung Fu, dancing, arts & crafts, basketball and more to play in groups and learn Chinese culture as well.
They also provide classes and activities for parents while the children attend school. For instance, they now offer an adult class in Chinese calligraphy.
Staten Island Chinese School is located at 33 Ferndale Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314 (I.S. 72), just minutes away from the Staten Island Shopping Mall.
Staten Island Chinese School is represented in CLTA-GNY membership. They are a non-profit organization and were established in 1971.
