Ancient Chinese Poetry?

Ancient Chinese Poetry?

Hi, Victoria. Can you help me by reading some stuff on this old hand made Chinese dish? Thanks. Question from Kirshna Golemon of Cleveland, Texas, U.S.A.

Victoria's Answer:

Hello Kirshna,

"呤到梅花 句亦香情" is originally from an ancient Chinese poetry couplet. The poem was composed by a teacher whose name is unknown.

"书成蕉叶文犹绿,吟到梅花 句亦香"

These characters are commonly carved on pottery just like the one in your picture.

The couplet means: after you write poems or articles on a Banana tree leaf, it seems as if the article is as green as the leaf; when you chant poems related to plum, it seems as though the words and sentences are as scented as the plum itself.

Hope this is helpful for you, Kirshna, to understand the meaning of those characters.

Best regards,

Victoria
