Why can't MY parents come to MY wedding?

My fiance is a Chinese man and I'm from another country. Why is it that if you get married and you hold the ceremony at your soon-to-be husband's house, then the parents of the girl are not allowed to join? (and vice versa)

Thanks!

Victoria's Answer:

Ni hao,

What you described is an old Chinese custom:
  • The female's family held the ceremony at noon,
  • Then the male's family held another ceremony at night.

That's why the parents of the girl didn't join the ceremony held in the male's house. And vice versa, the parents of the male didn't join the ceremony held in the female's house.

Nowadays, most families choose a star hotel for just one wedding party to celebrate the marriage. Parents of both sides participate together.

Any further questions, just feel free to contact us.

Best regards,

Victoria

Two ceremonies
by: Jeff

Thanks for this Victoria. I didn't know about this custom.

When Lisa and I were married, we had two separate ceremonies. It was just more practical, as our families lived in two separate countries.

A nice side benefit is we have two wedding anniversaries to celebrate each year! :)
